A Brief (Principial) Intro to Cosmonomic Existentialism –

Cosmonomic Existentialism, as a Christian philosophy, is a very old way of living a radical life of love. It does not lend itself to formalization. This is because it is not a new doctrine but rather a new way of understanding that very old way of loving (which was once simply known as the Way). Care to reject this law of love in Christ? That is your right – and we affirm you in it. However, we lay down this challenge: If you are so inclined to deny the God of love uniquely made manifest for us in Christ, see if you can out love this Jesus of history. If you accept this challenge but still reject our creed, we will make common cause with you for the glory of our God in Christ.

Love is not a nebulous concept devoid of meaning. It is a deep reality which you may deny but cannot ignore. It points to the very Living God who gave birth to meaning itself and visited us, becoming part of that creation as the most humiliated of all creatures: a human infant. That infant became a man who is God with us. That man – that God – is Jesus Christ. Deny Him, if you choose to, but the world has not yet been able to ignore or forget Him.

Cosmonomic Existentialism is a coin minted and backed by the full faith and credit of the Protestant Reformation. In my view, it is THE coin of the realm of meaning – that is creation – of which we are a part.

As a currency, it is eminently practical and, as I said, resists all formalization – think of it like bitcoin for philosophy – this resistance to formalization is particularly manifest in the fact that both sides of this coin (existential and cosmonomic) have already been expressed poetically and procedurally by Søren Kierkegaard and Herman Dooyeweerd, respectively. We see the enigmatic Dane as the spiritual successor to Martin Luther and the remarkable Dutch polymath as the intellectual heir to John Calvin.

This is why Cosmonomic Existentialism can only be seen (in terms of theory) as a hyper Protestant form of speculation within the broader Christian intellectual tradition, seeking to make its contributions to that tradition by way of the same radically critical spirit.
